What To Bring
2019-04-09Dress For Success For A Day On The Water
YEAR ROUND:
Capt. Mike wears long sleeves and boat shoes year round. Fish have teeth and a cut or hook to your toe is not fun. Sunburned feet are not fun either. I used to wear flip flops and now it looks like I am wearing alligator skin slippers when i am barefoot haha. Boat shoes don't mark the deck of the expensive boats so captains love them. Sunglasses are key to an enjoyable day on the water in Sunny Charleston.
SUMMER:
It is typically hot and humid here in the summer although the sea breezes and surrounding water make it more enjoyable on the boat than on land.
Wear a hat for shade. I prefer a mesh trucker hat because they keep cooler. The classic fisherman hat or palm frond hat will immediately blow off your head when the boat gets on plane although if you stow these type hats and put them on while fishing they are nice on calm hot days.
Long sleeve solar shirts are common now and they block the suns rays and prevent sunburn. I have long sleeve and light hooded varieties for sale if you don't have one and would like to purchase some. They are also helpful when the bugs are out.
Light long sleeve pants are nice as well for the sun, bugs and even the tops of your feet where flip flops or shoes won't cover.
BUFFS/NECK GAITERS - These are great for blocking sun, bugs and for cleaning your sunglasses. I have some for sale if you would like to purchase one before we depart,
WINTER/SPRING/FALL:
Most importantly bring a waterproof shell like a rain jacket or outdoor coat with a hood. Wear layers and long sleeves to stay comfortable all day. Bibs are amazing to have on cold or rough days. Hats gloves etc are great on cold days, if its exceptionally cold the captain will inform you to dress like you are going on a ski trip or hunting trip. Most of the time while we are fishing the temperatures are very comfortable but this additional gear is useful because the boat is going 30mph and there is wind chill factor (captains use knots for speed its slightly lower in relation to mph). Rubber or waterproof boots can be nice on cold days.
