Winter Report, Charleston SC - January 2017
2017-01-27Warm temperatures and active fish!
We are seeing warm water temperatures for this time of year.
Inshore - rivers, creeks, inlets, sounds and bays
Redfish (Red Drum/Spot tail) are the main target for me this time of year. The water is exceptionally clear and makes for some incredible sight fishing. We have been very successful with artificials such as zman jerk shadz and fly fishing has also been productive with natural colors and light flies fished slowly. We are fishing schools from groups of a dozen to up to over 100 fish.
We have also been catching a handful of spotted/speckled trout each trip as in the mid size range. We got 4 on zman trout tricks during our last trip but mainly targeted redfish.
I have seen some flounder on the flats in the clear water but have not been targeting or catching them.
Sheepshead and Black drum are still biting as well.
Nearshore (ocean)
Many species are currently shut down to protect them during spawning months but there are a few options available if you want to get out and catch some sustainable fish for dinner.
